Gray’s Beaked Whale
The melon bulges towards the blowhole and slopes down towards the beak. The beak is very long and pointed and the mouth line is relatively straight.

Unknown, but strandings indicate an inshore movement in summer.
Social system/Group size
Groups of up to 30 individuals were seen. They appear to be more social than other beaked whales.
Several ship strikes have been recorded around New Zealand.
They are one of the most common species to strand themselved in the Southern Hemisphere.
