Sowerby’s Beaked Whale
Can be distinguished by the male's dual teeth positioned far back in the mouth. The beak is moderately long and the melon is slightly convex. The coloration is gray with light countershading on the bottom. Has often shark bites and scars.
Known to be reclusive and to stay away from boats.
North Atlantic and Norwegian Sea
The northern population may move with advancing and retreating ice and the southern populations may move furhter inshore during summer.
Social system/Group size
Groups of 3 -10, often in mother/calf pairs.
Occur almost exclusively in deep waters past the continental shelf.
